Vegan Catering in Pune: A Pune Caterer's Guide

Can a full Pune event be catered vegan?

Can a full Pune event be catered vegan? Yes. The hard part is the dairy hiding outside the mains — ghee in the tadka, butter on the naan, malai in the gravy, curd in the marinade, khoya in the mithai, honey in dressings and gelatin in desserts. Each of those is replaced rather than worked around, and the line is cooked in its own pans with its own oil. Welcome Caterers caters these across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Hadapsar-Kharadi, the Lonavala-Khandala belt and Panchgani-Mahabaleshwar for 100 to 50,000 guests, with a tasting before you confirm and a written per-plate quote the same day on +91 96731 98867.

Key facts

  • No ghee, butter, cream, milk, paneer, curd, khoya or condensed milk anywhere on the line
  • No honey — jaggery or date syrup instead
  • No gelatin in desserts; agar is used to set
  • Fish sauce and oyster sauce excluded from all pan-Asian preparations

Quick answer summary

In one line: Can a full Pune event be catered vegan? — Welcome Caterers caters it across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Hadapsar-Kharadi, the Lonavala-Khandala belt and Panchgani-Mahabaleshwar, cooking on site with live counters, offering pure vegetarian, Jain and vegan lines, serving 100 to 50,000 guests, with a tasting before you confirm and a written per-plate quote the same day on +91 96731 98867.

Vegan handling, and the dairy that hides in Indian menus

A vegan line is only vegan if the whole supply chain is checked, not just the recipe. We replace ghee with cold-pressed oil, butter naan with oil-brushed roti, curd marinades with cashew cream, paneer with tofu, khoya sweets with date and nut sweets, honey with jaggery or date syrup, and gelatin with agar. Ice creams, mousses and most bakery items are the usual failure points.

Two less obvious ones: many commercial breads and biscuits carry milk solids, and a lot of pan-Asian sauces carry fish sauce or oyster sauce. We check labels for the consignment rather than assuming.

The vegan line is cooked in its own pans with its own oil, plated on its own counter and labelled at the counter, so a guest can read it rather than ask a steward.

  • Bread, biscuits and chocolate checked for milk solids on the actual consignment
  • Own pans, own oil, own fryer and own counter, with allergen labelling on every dish

A fully plant-based menu

The hard part of vegan catering in India is not the mains, it is the dairy hiding everywhere else: ghee in the tadka, butter on the naan, malai in the gravy, curd in the marinade, khoya in the mithai, honey in the dressing and gelatin in the mousse. Every one of those is swapped out below rather than worked around at the counter.

This is cooked as its own line in its own pans with its own oil, so nothing crosses over from the dairy kitchen.

  • Starters: Falafel with beetroot hummus
  • Starters: Tofu satay with peanut sauce
  • Starters: Vegan sushi and avocado maki
  • Starters: Tandoori mushroom and cauliflower, marinated in cashew cream rather than curd
  • Mains: Chickpea masala and dal tadka finished in cold-pressed oil, not ghee
  • Mains: Jackfruit biryani
  • Mains: Vegan Thai green curry in coconut milk
  • Mains: Tofu stir fry and baingan bharta
  • Sides: Quinoa salad, roasted vegetables, oil-brushed roti and vegan flatbread
  • Desserts: Coconut ice cream and vegan chocolate mousse set with silken tofu
  • Desserts: Date and walnut brownies, sweetened without honey

What this kind of catering typically costs in Pune

Per-plate pricing is driven by four things: the number of dishes, the number of live counters, the service style (buffet, plated or passed) and the guest count. Venue distance beyond Pune-Pimpri-Chinchwad or Lonavala adds a logistics line, and premium proteins or imported cheese move the number up.

These are the bands we quote inside the Pune belt — ₹450–₹2,200 per plate end to end — and they are the same bands quoted on every other page of this site. GST is added on the invoice and is not included in the figures below.

  • Simple vegetarian buffet, single cuisine: ₹450–₹800 per plate — Pooja lunches, satvik and Jain thali service, office vegetarian menus
  • Mixed veg and non-veg buffet, two live counters: ₹900–₹1,400 per plate — House parties, birthdays, smaller receptions
  • Wedding or reception spread, five to eight counters: ₹1,400–₹2,200 per plate — Full wedding service with dessert bar and paan counter
  • Grazing table styling: ₹18,000–₹65,000 — Quoted per station by length and produce, not per plate — the one booking we take under 100 guests
  • Corporate daily lunch contracts: lower per head than event catering, billed monthly with GST invoicing

What the rate covers, and what it does not

Every figure on this page comes from one price list, so the band quoted here is the band quoted on every other page of this site.

One live counter per 75 guests is the planning rule behind these bands, and each counter clears 75-100 guests per hour per counter. Distance beyond Pune-Pimpri-Chinchwad or Lonavala adds a travel line.

Logistics, timings and venue rules across the Pune belt

Pune venues are strict about load-in windows, lift access, gas cylinders and open-flame counters. We survey the venue before the event, confirm what the society or hotel allows, and design the counter layout around it.

Lonavala to Khandala is a good example. Destination weddings, large corporate offsites and resort celebrations in Lonavala, Khandala, Kamshet and the Pawna-Mulshi lake belt - we travel from Pune with our own equipment, chefs and service brigade.

Our standard run is four hours on site before service for buffets and six hours for a full wedding spread, with service staff at one steward per 25 guests for buffets and one steward per 12 guests for plated service. Everything is cleared and the space handed back clean before the team leaves.

  • Venue recce and counter layout plan before the event date
  • Live counters where open flame is permitted; induction and pre-seared alternatives where it is not
  • Separate vegetarian, Jain and satvik lines with dedicated utensils
  • FSSAI-compliant kitchen, temperature logs and covered transport
  • Full clearance, waste removal and venue handover after service

How the kitchen keeps the line separate

A correct recipe cooked on the wrong pan is not a correct dish, so the separation is a kitchen process rather than a promise. The line has its own section, its own vessels, its own oil and fryer, and its own transport crates, and it is prepped before anything that would contaminate it is cut that day.

On site it gets its own counter, its own service spoons and its own labelled signage, and the stewards working it are briefed not to move a spoon to another counter. If your programme runs late, we serve it as a complete meal early rather than making those guests wait.

  • Bread, biscuits and chocolate checked for milk solids on the actual consignment
  • Own pans, own oil, own fryer and own counter, with allergen labelling on every dish

Who is answering this question

Welcome Caterers is a multi-cuisine catering company operating across the Pune Metropolitan Region — Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Hadapsar-Kharadi, the Lonavala-Khandala belt and Panchgani-Mahabaleshwar. The kitchen cooks more than 25 cuisines, runs live counters and grazing tables at the venue, and caters events from 100-guest celebrations to 50,000-guest weddings and corporate functions, with a grazing table the one booking taken under 100 guests.

Everything below is written from our own operating experience in Pimple Saudagar, Chikhali, Hadapsar, Kharadi and the rest of the Pune belt, not from generic industry copy. If you want this applied to your own date and guest count, call +91 96731 98867 and we will send a written per-plate quote the same day.

How to book, and how far ahead

Peak dates need six to ten weeks: October to February weddings and the Diwali corporate season. Everything else is usually comfortable at two to three weeks, and we do take short-notice bookings when the kitchen has capacity.

The sequence is simple: share date, venue and guest count; we send a written per-plate quote the same day; we arrange a tasting for confirmed enquiries; you finalise the menu and spice levels after tasting; we do a venue recce and lock the counter plan.

  • Call or WhatsApp +91 96731 98867 with date, venue and headcount
  • Written per-plate quote the same day
  • Tasting session before you pay in full
  • Venue recce and counter layout confirmation
  • Setup, live service and full clearance on the day
  • Short-notice bookings taken when the kitchen has capacity
